The Ligeti Quartet

Ligeti is one of the most significant and distinctive composers of the 20th century, with an impressive repertoire of inventive compositions. This is a special opportunity to hear a collection of his string works in one concert. This performance takes us from one to four players, growing from solo into duo, trio and then the full quartet.

This year marks what would have been György Ligeti’s hundredth birthday. Born in 1923 into a world which changed unrecognisably many times over, Ligeti wrote music that carries within it the experience of these countless metamorphoses, from his passion for folk music inherited from Bartók and Kodály, to the neo-romantic, polymodal, micro polyphonic, avant-garde, dadaist, experimental, electronic, and postmodernist.

Ligeti’s string quartets contain some of the most influential music written in the 20th century and are widely regarded as classics of the modern era. They are also the reason that the Ligeti Quartet was formed, a decade ago, and so this centenary presents  the perfect opportunity to bring these monumental works to new audiences.

The Ligeti Quartet (established in 2010) have long loved and championed Ligeti’s musical outlook, particularly his balance of sincerity and irony. His music defies boundaries whilst always maintaining its connection with the listener. This often results in attracting audience members who may not often frequent classical music concerts as well as also appealing to a younger demographic, something they are particularly passionate about.

Freya Goldmark (violin 1), Patrick Dawkins (violin 2), Richard Jones (viola), Val Welbanks (cello).
