Siegfried Schott was one of the most important German Egyptologists of the 20th century. In the early 1920s he worked as a painter, graphic artist and poet, and was an active participant in the circle that produced the art review ‘Kundung’. His work as an artist was short-lived. After receiving his doctorate in 1926, he became an assistant at the Berlin Egyptian Museum. He was later a lecturer at the University of Göttingen and then a professor of Egyptology at the University of Heidelberg. Like many of his contemporaries, four of his works were selected as part of the famed Nazi exhibition, ‘Degenerate Art’ in 1938. Most of his work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
