Family Scene (Beckmann Family), 1918
Best known for his extraordinary number of self-portraits, Beckmann received great critical acclaim throughout the years of the Weimar Republic, but his art was denounced by the Nazis and, upon Hitler’s ascension to power, rejected as degenerate art. Originally failing to gain a visa to the U.S. and painting in a studio in Amsterdam, Beckmann eventually emigrated after the war to New York. He died there in 1950.

Completed just a year before Gesichter’s publication, ‘Family Scene’ is a depiction of the Beckmann’s own family: in the foreground his wife, Minna Tube, sits serenely as their child, Peter, rides a wooden rocking horse; in the background Frau Tube, Minna’s mother, watches over the scene as a kind of matriarch while Beckmann leans in behind her. In contrast with many of the upsetting scenes that make up the rest of the series, ‘Family Scene’ is comparatively calm. As if to reference the peacefulness of the company of loved ones, Beckmann has inserted the moon, a sole star and curved cloud-forms in the sky above, symbols of a serenity that presides over family amidst the turmoil of wartime life.
