Although born in Switzerland in 1887, Charles-Edouard Jeanneret became a French citizen and adopted the pseudonym Le Corbusier under which he became internationally famous as an architect and artist. He is generally regarded as one of the most influential, if sometimes controversial, architects and urban planners of the twentieth century.
In 1918 Le Corbusier met the Cubist artist Amédée Ozenfant , collaborating to create a new art movement called Purism in favour of a return to clear, ordered forms expressive of the modern machine age. Early on in his career Le Corbusier concentrated almost exclusively on painting but thereafter continued to paint and make prints, drawing upon a mixture of his Purist style and an interest in the more organic female form.
