Born in Hampstead, London, on 19 March 1908, Rothenstein was the youngest of four. He studied at Chelsea Polytechnic and Central School of Arts and Crafts, 1924-7. He had his first one-man show in 1938 and during World War II participated in the Pilgrim Trust Recording Britain project. After the war, he taught printmaking at Camberwell School of Art and was Art Fellow at Sheffield University in 1962.

Rothenstein became one of the most experimental printmakers in Britain during the ‘50s and ’60s. As well as found objects such as wood offcuts and metal debris, he incorporated fresh 20th century imagery into his relief prints, combining photographic material with traditional woodcuts and linocuts. Numerous major galleries currently hold his work and he was made Hon. RE and elected RA in 1983.

    About the Work

Whether working with woodblock or zinc etching plate, silkscreen or linoleum scrap Michael Rothenstein [1908-93] was perhaps the most experimental British graphic artist of the 20th century. For over 4 decades he dedicated the greater part of his career to printmaking, advocating it as an expressive means of revelation, not merely a technique for reproduction.

Rothenstein exploded the boundaries of traditional printmaking and this insightful and aptly named book captures the same excitement and daring that galvanised his work. Michael Rothenstein Artist Printmaker – Exploding the Boundaries contains 108 pages and features a series of essays by acclaimed writer - and long time Rothenstein champion - Mel Gooding together with 101 examples of his work. It is published alongside a major new Goldmark curated exhibition of Rothenstein’s work which will premiere at Dean Clough Halifax in February 2019 and tour the UK until 2022, and a Goldmark produced film also entitled Exploding the Boundaries.

    What our customers say

The picture I had arranged to see was ready for me and staff gave me lots of time to look at it and decide, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. No pressure. Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had great advice on framing and protective glass.

Astonishing place. Driving home I realised it was probably the best experience I've ever had in a shop/gallery. I'll be filling my house with their artworks for years to come. A unique place.
