The Chapel Of St George, Kemp Town, 1939
Piper experimented with printmaking from as early as 1923 when he produced four wood engravings. Piper’s prints embody his love of Britain through their depiction of its art, architecture and topography. However frequently underpinning their design, as the artist Rigby Graham has indicated, are the elements of collage, construction and assemblage that featured in his modernist work of the early 1930s.
Notes by the artist: The Chapel Of St George, Kemp Town.
This building stands in a small quiet square in Kemp Town, not far from the sea front. It was built in the 1820's by Wild and Busby, architects. (Busby was probably the architect who designed Euston Square, London.) Inside, it has been spoilt: that is to say, its original fittings have been removed and it has been made more conventionally 'ecclesiastical' in appearance. But outside it is still one of the most charming of the Brighton churches, its stucco and yellow-brick walls having very much the colour and texture of faded newspaper. The building on the extreme right is a bath house, built in the would-be Hindu style of the Pavilion.
