The Great Happiness, 1965
This is one of several of Collins's prints which began as an exercise and developed into a complete statement. Collins made a merit of the awkward shape of the plate he was given. He visualises its lowest section as raw material which, as the eye rises, is transformed by fire, reaching ultimate expression in the radiant calmness of the sun. The presentation again owes a debt to Eastern art. Collins views nature and the whole cosmos as alive with an inner energy linking all its parts. This curious combination of the dynamic and calm is central to 'Great Happiness', of which Robin Skelton has written that 'the dancing gaieties of texture express vitality and peace' (Taken from the book which took it from The Vision of Cecil Collins, The Malahat Review 13 January 1970).
