Georges Braque was born in Argenteuil, Val-d’Oise, 1882. Growing up in Le Havre, he trained as a painter and decorator, but also studied artistic painting at the École des Beaux-Arts and later attended the Académie Humbert in Paris. Though his early work was influenced by Fauvism, Braque is principally known for his Cubist collaborations with Picasso.
In total Braque made approximately 192 prints including drypoints, etchings, woodcuts and lithographs. In 1921 he made his first colour lithograph but during that decade still only completed a small number of prints. After World War II Braque produced more lithographs and during the last 13 years of his career became a more prolific printmaker (almost 3/4 of his output dates from that period).
