Sometimes the word 'gallery' simply isn't enough. Yes, it's the core of a business dedicated to the best in painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. But here the books turn into paintings, the paintings turn into films. Watch our short film to find out a bit more about us and what we do.

Robert Colquhoun was a Scottish painter, printmaker and theatre set designer. He was born in Kilmarnock and was educated at Kilmarnock Academy. He won a scholarship to study at the Glasgow School of Art, where he met Robert MacBryde with whom he established a lifelong homosexual relationship and professional collaboration, the pair becoming known as "the two Roberts".
Colquhoun's early works of agricultural labourers and workmen were strongly influenced by the colours and light of rural Ayrshire. His work developed into a more austere, Expressionist style, heavily influenced by Picasso, and concentrated on the theme of the isolated, agonised figure. From the mid-1940s to the early 1950s he was considered one of the leading artists of his generation.

About the Work
Ball point pen drawing.
From the collection of Christine MacAusland. Given by Robert Colquhoun to longtime friend Christine MacAusland. The drawings can be dated precisely as they were accompanied by a letter placing them in Museum Street, London. Towards the end of his life he and MacBryde were living in accommodation above the then Museum Street Gallery. They had been given this space by the two owners Fred Reid and Bobby Katz, also booksellers. Christine MacAusland befriended the 2 Roberts after running away to London, Soho as a teenager. She being a painter, acquainted herself with the Soho art set, Bacon, Freud et al and her Scottish roots brought about an immediate connection with the two Roberts. Her lifelong friendship meant she attended Robert Colquhoun’s funeral in 1962.
