Carel Weight was one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. He studied at Goldsmiths as a youth and was making a living as a painter even before he was made an Official War Artist, which was to inform much of his later work.

He became one of the most popular of all teachers at the Royal College of Art. His pupils include David Hockney, Peter Blake, Ron Kitaj. As he said, "my job was not to teach them how to paint - but to teach them how to paint what they want to paint".

A friend to many - he arranged to have Lowry elected to the Academy - and to numerous artists that he helped to promote, Weight exhibited at virtually every major venue worldwide. His work is held in every important collection of Modern British art including HRH Queen Elizabeth, Tate Gallery, The Fitzwilliam and Ashmoleon Museums, Imperial War Museum, Vatican collection and British Museum.
    About the work
    About the Work
A signed 14 colour screenprint published by Fieldborne Galleries.

From the 1975 oil of the same title housed in Doncaster Art Gallery.

Carel Weight was born in London to a German mother. He always said that he had a lonely childhood which was full of dreams of ghosts, and that sense of the supernatural in the everyday is apparent in many of his paintings. The posture of the child in this image is reminiscent of Edvard Munch's The Scream. For many years Weight was professor of painting at the Royal College of Art, London.

    What our customers say

The picture I had arranged to see was ready for me and staff gave me lots of time to look at it and decide, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. No pressure. Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had great advice on framing and protective glass.

Astonishing place. Driving home I realised it was probably the best experience I've ever had in a shop/gallery. I'll be filling my house with their artworks for years to come. A unique place.
