Chapman was born in London and studied art in Gravesend before attending the RCA and the Slade School. Influenced by Sickert and the Euston Road School of painters, in 1951 he moved to Great Bardfield where he became part of the artistic community alongside Edward Bawden and Michael Rothenstein. The following year he visited Wales for the first time and the country became a lifelong inspiration.

Chapman won the Gold Medal for painting at the Royal Eisteddfod of Wales in 1957 but became disillusioned with his painting and produced almost no work for twelve years from 1969. Revival of interest in Chapman’s work culminated in a major retrospective here at Goldmark Gallery in 1992, and his work is well represented in public collections including the National Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
About the work
About the Work
Original signed hard ground etching and aquatint, printed in black (some copies have hand-colour).

Edition of 50. From The Valleys Suite.

In 1953 Chapman made a journey through the coal-mining valleys of South Wales, and discovered the Rhondda Valley, where he said "I realised that here I could find the material that would perhaps make me a painter at last".
He returned to the South Wales Valleys over the next ten years and produced a large amount of drawings, etchings and paintings. In particular of the villages that comprise the Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach Valleys.

What our customers say
Wendy

The picture I had arranged to see was ready for me and staff gave me lots of time to look at it and decide, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. No pressure. Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had great advice on framing and protective glass.

Astonishing place. Driving home I realised it was probably the best experience I've ever had in a shop/gallery. I'll be filling my house with their artworks for years to come. A unique place.
