Copley was born in Manchester in 1875.He studied art at the Manchester School of Art and the Royal Academy. He spent ten years in Italy before moving to London. In 1909 Copley and Joseph Pennell started the Senefelder Club to publicise and promote lithography as an artistic medium. Copley was honorary secretary of the club until 1916. During this time he met the French-English artist Ethel Léontine Gabain and the couple married in June 1913. Copley was influenced by Ford Madox Brown. He became interested in lithography in 1906 and initially worked in colour before exclusively working in black and white.
    About the work
    About the Work

    Signed etching, 1936.
Copley revisited his 1910 lithograph of the same subject matter reworking it as an etching with virtually identical composition.
'But this image, generally regarded as the first
modern British print,...an extraordinary action scene with two diagonally placed figures, blurred and distorted in their movement. There is little sense of them being part of a larger game. It is an image
more about atmosphere than narrative, a ghostly depiction of characters engaged not so much in sport, but some elemental battle, reminiscent of William Blake.' David Whiting, Goldmark 2022

    What our customers say

The picture I had arranged to see was ready for me and staff gave me lots of time to look at it and decide, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. No pressure. Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had great advice on framing and protective glass.

Astonishing place. Driving home I realised it was probably the best experience I've ever had in a shop/gallery. I'll be filling my house with their artworks for years to come. A unique place.
