Karl Weschke (1925-2005). Painter and draughtsman, born in Taubenpreskeln, Germany. As a boy he was encouraged to paint by the artist Otto Dix. Taken prisoner of war while serving in the German Air force, Weschke arrived in Britain in 1945. Studied at St Martin’s School of Art, 1949. After meeting with members of the David Bomberg-inspired Borough Group in Spain in 1953 and a period in Sweden in 1954–5, Weschke moved to Cornwall in 1955 after becoming acquainted with the artist Bryan Wynter in London.
He was undoubtedly a Cornish painter. Fifty years of his life were spent on the rugged coast of the Penwith peninsula.
