Leonard Baskin was born in 1922 in New Jersey, reared in New York and educated at a Yeshiva (a Jewish religious college) before studying at Yale. While teaching in Massachusetts he founded Gehenna, a private press which produced over 100 fine, illustrated books. He then moved to Devon for nine years, befriending the poet Ted Hughes and his wife Sylvia Plath and illustrating for both.

Baskin was a prolific print-maker; his prints varied from woodcuts to lithography and etching and his subjects covered portraits, flower studies, biblical, classical and mythological scenes. Baskin’s sculpture, watercolours, and prints are in the permanent collections of the world’s major art galleries, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Vatican Museum and the Tate Gallery.

    About the Work

    Signed and dated bronze relief.
Cast at the Bedi-Makky Art Foundry, Brooklyn New York.
Published by the Kennedy Gallery New York. Bears the foundry stamp and estate stamp.

Literature: Irma B. Jaffe, 'The Sculpture of Leonard Baskin', Viking Press, New York, pg.214, illustrated page 190.

The theme of continuity wove through several of Baskin’s major works through the 60s and 70s with a focus on father son relationships such as Abraham and Isaac and the parable of The Prodigal Son (and the sculpture of the same name). It is related to the relief Fruitfulness from Permanence elsewhere in this exhibit.

    What our customers say
    Wendy

The picture I had arranged to see was ready for me and staff gave me lots of time to look at it and decide, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. No pressure. Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had great advice on framing and protective glass.

Astonishing place. Driving home I realised it was probably the best experience I've ever had in a shop/gallery. I'll be filling my house with their artworks for years to come. A unique place.
