Ernst Heinrich Barlach was a German expressionist sculptor, printmaker and writer. Although he was a supporter of the war in the years leading to World War I, his participation in the war made him change his position, and he is mostly known for his sculptures protesting against the war.

About the Work
Original signed lithograph from Die Ausgestoßenen (The Outcasts) portfolio, Berlin 1922.
Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) produced powerful wood and bronze sculptures depicting weary, rugged figures with great dignity. Strong, bulky peasants with expressive faces were his typical subjects. A brief stint serving in WWI converted Barlach into a pacifist, after which he produced many monuments warning of the consequences of war. Later in life he concentrated on prints producing hundreds of black-and-white lithographs and woodcuts some of which illustrated books and plays he wrote himself.
