Daily Herald Order of Industrial Heroism, 1923
Gill never completely abandoned the religious roots which inform his work. Eroticism also features as an important part of it, and Gill was not afraid to combine the two. He held a number of teaching jobs, including gilding at the Central School, and was an associate of the RA. In 1937 he was awarded an honorary associateship of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. Gill died in 1940.
Physick 220-223. First version with dove (later replaced with red star). Printed from 5 blocks. An unused pull on the same heavy wove paper as used for the hand-made paper edition of 80 copies for plate 55 in the Douglas Cleverdon 1929 iconography. The St. Christopher portion only is reproduced on page 35 in Wood Engravings being a selection of Eric Gill's engravings on Wood, Saint Dominic's Press 1924 (where it has a printed title and page number). Not in the Faber & Faber 1934 iconography.
