A wood engraver, sculptor, typographer, and draughtsman, Gill was born in Brighton. He studied in Chichester at the Theological College, and then at the Technical and Art School before moving to London and attending the Central School. Gill later lived in Sussex and around him sprung up an order of religious artists, influenced by his Roman Catholic views.
Gill never completely abandoned the religious roots which inform his work. Eroticism also features as an important part of it, and Gill was not afraid to combine the two. He held a number of teaching jobs, including gilding at the Central School, and was an associate of the RA. In 1937 he was awarded an honorary associateship of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. Gill died in 1940.

Procreant Hymn by E Powys Mathers was originally published by The Golden Cockerel Press in 1926 with five copper engravings: God Sending, Earth Waiting, Earth Inviting, Dalliance and Earth Receiving. In an edition of 175. In addition 25 copies were provided with a further suite of 4 alternative designs of a more erotic nature titled: God Sending, Earth Inviting, Earth Wrestling, and Earth Receiving.
This new edition is limited to 50 sets and has been printed by Martyn Grimmer, master printer at Spike Print, Bristol on Somerset 300 gsm Soft White paper.
Eric Gill subsequently made an additional engraving Yahoo on the reverse of Earth Waiting which was not editioned and only a few impressions are known. Martyn Grimmer has now made the first edition of this engraving in an edition of 50 impressions.
