Born in 1776 in Suffolk, by 1794 Constable had begun his artistic career, making a sketching tour of Norfolk, and produced his first etchings in 1797. In 1799 Constable attended the RA, first exhibiting there in 1802. Marrying in 1816, he and his wife moved to Bloomsbury, London a year later, though she, suffering from tuberculosis, died in 1828 to her husband’s utmost dismay.
Constable exhibited regularly throughout the country and was made an elected RA in 1829. Works of his shown at the Paris and Lille Salons in 1824 and 1826 earned him gold medals from Charles X and the Society of Fine Arts respectively. His finest work, the first edition of English Landscape, a series of mezzotints after his designs by David Lucas, was published 1830-2. He died in 1837.
