Born in Warsaw in 1911 into the Jewish ghetto, Herman left school at the age of 12. An apprentice printer, he was forced to become a commercial artist due to lead poisoning, work which introduced him to the Warsaw 'intelligentsia'. Wary of his Jewish faith and left-wing affiliations, he escaped to Belgium in 1938 and (through sheer luck involving the Polish Air Force) ended up in Glasgow.
Herman’s artistic achievements were more appreciated during the fifties and sixties when he was showing in a great number of one-man exhibitions throughout the UK. He never followed any fashions in art and never courted for favours. He was awarded OBE for his services to British Art in 1981 and in 1990 became a Royal Academician.
