Sid Burnard was born in Brighton in 1948. Introduced to the art of beachcombing by his Romany grandmother, Sid learnt to appreciate the beauty of nature from an early age. His time at Bristol Guild of Applied Arts gave him a profound understanding of visual arts and crafts and allowed him to put his personal vision into practice.

He is now based in Borth near Aberystwyth in Wales, where the flotsam and jetsam from the nearby sea is his only source of materials. Working with found objects, nothing is changed - simply introduced to one another. His driftwood pieces, usually birds, boats or mythical beasts, are full of his passion, integrity and wonderful humour.
    About the work
    About the Work
Childhood memories prompted this compositions. Imagine having played in a low-tide rockpool and investigated all the creatures and features, one might have built a sandcastle. Called for picnic lunch, the little spade is stuck into the nearest spot. Whilst enjoying your sandwiches and lemonade, a little bird might use the perch you’ve left.

The yellow marine ply with white over it could be an incoming tide surf, melted plastic over pebbles provides a substantial base for the chair leg, which has been partly gnawed by a dog. I like to use parts of tools, so the plastic handle made a practical perch for the bird, a small wader perhaps. Cannibalising bits of tools uses the same philosophy as the shedmaker. Everything and anything can be used. No rules, nothing need be wasted.

The pink and white marine ply base was selected simply because it suited the tiny shovel. Rust appearing gives an orange-pink combination, highly unlikely! With only the shaft of the tool left, it needed a very small bird. Two different woods, the knot on the head gives two different personalities. All items in this piece were collected after two or three summers, after families have holidayed. Nostalgia here.

The picture I had arranged to see was ready for me and staff gave me lots of time to look at it and decide, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. No pressure. Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had great advice on framing and protective glass.

Astonishing place. Driving home I realised it was probably the best experience I've ever had in a shop/gallery. I'll be filling my house with their artworks for years to come. A unique place.
