Sid Burnard was born in Brighton in 1948. Introduced to the art of beachcombing by his Romany grandmother, Sid learnt to appreciate the beauty of nature from an early age. His time at Bristol Guild of Applied Arts gave him a profound understanding of visual arts and crafts and allowed him to put his personal vision into practice.

He is now based in Borth near Aberystwyth in Wales, where the flotsam and jetsam from the nearby sea is his only source of materials. Working with found objects, nothing is changed - simply introduced to one another. His driftwood pieces, usually birds, boats or mythical beasts, are full of his passion, integrity and wonderful humour.
    About the work
    About the Work
Begun from a similar starting point to ‘Ode to joy’, in that the ‘figure’ of arm, shoulder and back of this item of driftwood shouted at me when I found it washed up on the beach amidst a mass of twigs, boughs and debris following a particularly boisterous high-tide.

In the studio, in a tray marked ‘picture parts’, I remembered a ‘head’ that I’d had for years. Introduced, they made a fine marriage, and I well recall the excitement of wondering/deciding how to present the happy ‘couple’. After numerous experiments, I committed the sailor to this particular boat, which gave a necessary depth, yet slimness, of wood.

Look at the way he leans against the side. Sail full, flying-fish pilot, queen scallop shell fin rudder-like as they ride the waves together. Due to the nature of this construction, a sturdy flat base was required, and this well-rounded hunk of drift-log fitted the bill.

The picture I had arranged to see was ready for me and staff gave me lots of time to look at it and decide, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. No pressure. Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had great advice on framing and protective glass.

Astonishing place. Driving home I realised it was probably the best experience I've ever had in a shop/gallery. I'll be filling my house with their artworks for years to come. A unique place.
