House was born in South Wales in 1932 and studied at Luton and St. Albans Schools of Art. During the 1950s he worked for an advertising agency and it wasn’t until 1961 that he was able to pursue his artistic career, supporting himself by part-time teaching. His client base was extremely diverse; besides the leading London galleries, it included the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Ashmolean Gallery.

The Tate Gallery holds more than 100 of his prints and his work is also represented in many important public collections including the Arts Council, the British Council, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the M.O.M.A. in New York. In 2004 House died and his autobiographical memoir Tin-pan Valley was published posthumously. The following year a major retrospective was held at the Millinery Works. Discover more >

    About the Work

Original lithograph with estate stamped signature.
    Edition of 80.

'The need to reassess one's regional origin and the opportunity to travel the motorways. The rapid changes in terrain now approachable by recent roads exposing differences between counties within travelling minutes. The sense of culture changes, old names and language. The visual effect of nature all amidst progress and adjacent placing of city, town and the populous needs of the moment. These thoughts, together with specific visual ideas related to names and to places, have given way to another slant, to 'order and randomness' as a design programme. The following prints (cat 126-139), along with new paintings, bring together these concepts. Ordered form ideas on random gridded formats but again imposed with strong division, gives an endless opportunity to evoke other thoughts, memories and some surprises...'

    Excellent!
    What our customers say
    Wendy

The picture I had arranged to see was ready for me and staff gave me lots of time to look at it and decide, but I loved it as soon as I saw it. No pressure. Very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I had great advice on framing and protective glass.

Astonishing place. Driving home I realised it was probably the best experience I've ever had in a shop/gallery. I'll be filling my house with their artworks for years to come. A unique place.
